The Secret Behind Viral Videos

November 29th 2007 17:16
Viral videos are the ones that seem to spread through the internet like, you guessed it, a virus. They're so ubiquitous that everyone's seen it, all around the world. Even some random goatherder that you run into in Mongolia has seen Numa Numa.

They used to be brilliant... mostly, they were unintentionally funny and caused the star of the video to be shamed in front of the whole world, like the Star Wars Kid.

Others are simple fantastic videos, made with passion and spirit, like The Evolution of Dance and Lazy Sunday.

Corporations have no idea how to be cool and they usually struggle trying to identify with 'those crazy kids'. NBC went on a lawsuit binge trying to get people to stop watching Lazy Sunday.... but it's a ridiculous notion. Certainly, you'd rather have people watching your show, even if it's for free, rather than NOT watching your show.

Some corporations have tried to cash in on this marketing gravy train, using the viral video format to market their products. Usually shoes.

Dan Greenberg wrote a post that got picked up all over the Net, talking about how his company takes corporate videos and makes them go viral. While a video can have the potential to go viral, he tries to guarantee it.

From the post:

" * Make it short: 15-30 seconds is ideal; break down long stories into bite-sized clips
* Design for remixing: create a video that is simple enough to be remixed over and over again by others. Ex: “Dramatic Hamster”
* Don’t make an outright ad: if a video feels like an ad, viewers won’t share it unless it’s really amazing. Ex: Sony Bravia
* Make it shocking: give a viewer no choice but to investigate further. Ex: “UFO Haiti”
* Use fake headlines: make the viewer say, “Holy shit, did that actually happen?!” Ex: “Stolen Nascar”
* Appeal to sex: if all else fails, hire the most attractive women available to be in the video. Ex: “Yoga 4 Dudes”
"

And we're such suckers. Did you see the Yoga 4 Dudes short? It's such a stupidly simple idea, but one that I can't turn away from.

Chinese Black Market iPhones

November 28th 2007 18:04
Chinese black market iPhone ad
The iPhone hasn't been officially released in China yet, but already it's been making waves.

Whether or not Apple released the iPhone in China is almost irrelevant; smugglers bring in desirable goods for the enormous population to devour. Though the interface is in Chinese, that doesn't stop crafty hackers, who have figured out how to unlock the phone and install Chinese software on it.

Wired's post on the iPhone craze in China shows how far they'll go to use one...

"Stripped of communications capabilities and lacking support for Chinese characters, these devices were glorified, nearly useless PDAs. They sold for $1,200 to $2,400 apiece and weren't much of a hit with Chinese consumers.

New Jersey student George Hotz's highly publicized unlocking feat of Aug. 21 injected some supply into the Chinese iPhone market, and the prices quickly dropped to $700. But by the end of the month, local iPhones still couldn't send text messages in Chinese. And most available iPhones were still not completely unlocked. They could only make calls, not receive any."

China is like the Wild Wild West, with less Will Smith and more hissing rattlesnakes... almost anything can happen there, with the nebulous laws, the hard-to-learn language and the massive population that contains an extremely intelligent population.

When word came out about the iPhone, Chinese reverse engineers knocked one out of the park:

The End of Oil

November 27th 2007 18:53
While car manufacturers are chuckling and encouraging us to maintain our 3-car-per-home habit, some analysts are getting increasingly testy about what could be the end of oil, as outlined in this Wired post.

It's a story published in the Wall Street Journal, and it's almost doomsday style fear.

I can't read the story since I'm not a fancy-pantsy 'subscriber', so I won't help the WSJ and link to them. Let them choke on the inflated price of their subscriptions.

I won't bother quoting them either.

I will paraphrase them, though... basically, they predict that the ceiling on oil production is about 100 million barrels a day - and we're already at 85 million barrels a day. After that, we're maxed out... which means if the demand for oil increases, with affluence spreading to the huge populations in China and India, it'll become an increasingly scare resource.

From the Wired post:

"There's still a lot of oil left to be pumped. But there is a growing belief that several factors are converging to create a practical limit to how much we can pull from the earth each day."

And with the oil fields running dry:

"Most of the world's biggest oil fields are aging, and their production is falling. There is widespread speculation that the Ghawar oil field in Saudi Arabia, the world's largest, is petering out, which is significant because it likely has produced more than half the oil that has flowed out of the kingdom. At the rate oil fields are being depleted, simply maintaining our current production of 85 million barrels a day will require producing at least another 4 million daily barrels every year."

So, we just rely on alternative fuels, right?

It's not that simple... while local governments may be able to push solar power or wind power, reorienting an entire nation towards an alternative fuel requires a massive infrastructure investment.

Can we do it? It's all up in the air, but as my flatmate said, looking over my shoulder as I wrote this: 'we're all fucked'.

Rock Band looks like a lot of fun

Rock Band demo review fast frets!
I've missed the boat on all the music games... back in the day, my friend used to sing the praises of Parappa the Rapper, and I admit, it looked kind of fun.

When Guitar Hero came out, I didn't make much noise about it. After all, I play the guitar, and that was a game for lesser mortals. I used to be able to play Sweet Child O' Mine and Stairway to Heaven, like every other mediocre guitarist that thinks he's good enough to play Wembley Stadium

Asus Eee PC changing the game

November 20th 2007 18:13
This editorial post on Ars Technica describes how the Asus Eee PC is slapping Intel on the bum (in encouragement) and slapping Microsoft in the face (in contempt).

I've written about the Asus Eee PC before, and I had nothing but praise for the laptop, despite the fact that people are complaining about the tiny keyboard

While the technology world seems daunting and overcomplicated at times (who can keep track of the number of transistors on the latest Intel chip?), sometimes a product comes along that just seems to make sense.

And then He smiled upon them, and it was Good

USB Device charger in bright colours

Bi-plug USB wall charger
It's a slick, obviously brilliant idea: make a USB charger that connects to a standard wall plug.

There have been variations of this idea going around, but the Bi-Plug crams it all into one crayon-colourful package, light as hell and easy to carry
