Techbreak - June 2008

Bill Gates young mugshot
Bill Gates is getting back a lot of love in the geek community... he's retiring from Microsoft and he's reminding us that his only crime was to try and push the future of computing. He did that, nicely, with the introduction of Windows and the Office suite.

Along the way, though, things became increasingly sticky... as the biggest software company in the world, Microsoft drew the attention of hackers and critics, who sought to pick apart the company's failings.

As Gates removed himself further from the reins, Microsoft became increasingly contemptuous of users, pushing us around with ineffective DRM and stumbles in Vista. Many of us have had bad experiences with Windows - I know I have - and my response to that was to switch to Linux, where, I still have problems, but it's possible for me to fix them - and I enjoy it!

On BoingBoing, I found a link to an email that Bill Gates sent to a Microsoft team, complaining about how hard it was to use the online download system.

He tries to download moviemaker from microsoft.com, and is shocked to find out how difficult it is:

"I tried scoping to Media stuff. Still no moviemaker. I typed in movie. Nothing. I typed in movie maker. Nothing.

So I gave up and sent mail to Amir saying - where is this Moviemaker download? Does it exist?

So they told me that using the download page to download something was not something they anticipated."

The worst part, Bill finds, is that Windows Update insists on downloading updates, even though that's not what Bill wants to do. I've had this experience before, and I never enjoyed it. It's one reason that I felt disgusted using Windows:

"So I went to Windows update. Windows Update decides I need to download a bunch of controls. (Not) just once but multiple times where I get to see weird dialog boxes.

Doesn't Windows update know some key to talk to Windows?

Then I did the scan. This took quite some time and I was told it was critical for me to download 17megs of stuff.

This is after I was told we were doing delta patches to things but instead just to get 6 things that are labeled in the SCARIEST possible way I had to download 17meg.

So I did the download. That part was fast. Then it wanted to do an install. This took 6 minutes and the machine was so slow I couldn't use it for anything else during this time.

What the heck is going on during those 6 minutes? That is crazy. This is after the download was finished.

Then it told me to reboot my machine. Why should I do that? I reboot every night -- why should I reboot at that time?

So I did the reboot because it INSISTED on it. Of course that meant completely getting rid of all my Outlook state."

And then it gets worse as Bill realizes that there's a bunch of installed crap on his machine that he doesn't know anything about. It's not a virus, it's just Microsoft trying to make sure his machine is up-to-date - in the worst, most user-frightening way.

Finally, Bill thinks he's gotten to the Moviemaker download part of the process and installs a whole bunch more stuff:

"So now I think I am going to have Moviemaker. I go to my add/remove programs place to make sure it is there.

It is not there.

What is there? The following garbage is there. Microsoft Autoupdate Exclusive test package, Microsoft Autoupdate Reboot test package, Microsoft Autoupdate testpackage1. Microsoft AUtoupdate testpackage2, Microsoft Autoupdate Test package3.

Someone decided to trash the one part of Windows that was usable? The file system is no longer usable. The registry is not usable. This program listing was one sane place but now it is all crapped up.

But that is just the start of the crap. Later I have listed things like Windows XP Hotfix see Q329048 for more information. What is Q329048? Why are these series of patches listed here? Some of the patches just things like Q810655 instead of saying see Q329048 for more information.

What an absolute mess."

Yes, what a mess...

Kubuntu Hardy Heron running on an Acer Aspire 4315

I was in the market for a new laptop - my old one was doing fine, but it was hardly portable, and I needed a decent work laptop.

I shopped around, planning to spend around $900. It was a sore spot with me that all laptops come with Microsoft Windows pre-installed; Vista, in most cases, XP if you're lucky.

Cats like me, though, don't like paying money for Windows. I don't enjoy using it, preferring the open-source bliss of Linux. I was prepared to buy a laptop, sear the Windows out of it, and install my own noise on it.

I was shocked to find the Acer Aspire 4315, a low-end laptop that comes with Ubuntu preinstalled! I bought it for $580 at LaptopsPlus.com.au, in the Capitol Markets in Haymarket, Sydney. At that low price, the systems are flying out the door. The week before I bought it, with the Acer cashback, it was only $500. Now, it's up to $600.

The system has an Intel Celeron 1.8 GHz processor with the new X3100 graphics chip. It's not a high-end graphics adapter, but it's surprisingly powerful for an integrated solution. I've got 1 GB of RAM in this badboy, with a 80 GB hard drive. Wireless, ethernet, card reader, USB, it's got all the rest. A fine package for less than $600.

Instead of using the wonderful Ubuntu installation already provided, I decided to format the hard drive and partition my drive, installing Windows, Kubuntu 8.04, along with a separate partition for my /home directory.

It was a little bit of work setting it all up and installing the look that I wanted, but, as you can see from the snapshot, it's a very pretty system, with great software and the easiest update system I've ever imagined.

I'm so happy to be free of the chains and tethers of Windows! If only games would run flawlessly on Linux, then I'd crumble my Windows partition into dust!

Questions about the 4315? Post a comment and I'll direct you to solutions for getting your wireless working!

Wine 1.0 almost released!

June 9th 2008 02:39
Wine 1.0 has a release candidate, which means the developers have picked a stable version of the upcoming software, and want to iron out any further, glaring bugs.

What is Wine?

Wine Is Not an Emulator.

The strange acronym is a tongue-in-cheek naming system common in Linux and Unix, where the software wants to distance itself from other products.

Very simply, Wine allows Linux users to run Windows programs without having Windows. It's a brilliant idea, really, and I've used it very successfully to play Dwarf Fortress.

Why is this important? It gives people another reason to make the switch to Linux... the most common argument against it is that "I need to use X for work/home/hobbies/fun, otherwise I'd switch".

Why do I care if more people switch to Linux? I just reinstalled Windows and Linux on a new laptop. Kubuntu installed without a hitch, though I had to monkey around to get the wireless to work. Luckily, the community support for Ubuntu is incredibly accessible and easy to find.

Windows on the other hand, is still crippled. I can't find the right drivers from Acer, and I'll probably have to jump through quite a few hoops to get it to work. Bah!

If more people used Linux, drivers would be easier to find, more companies would support the creation of Linux drivers, and then some of the ease-of-use issues with weaning yourself off Windows would disappear.

Try Linux - and get Wine. You don't have to give up as much as you thought!

Here's an impressive database of the programs verified to run with Wine, along with helpful community notes!

MSI Wind impressions

MSI Wind Ultraportable notebook PC
There's been a lot of noise about the Asus Eee PC... certainly, the Eee was a brilliant promotion. A low-end notebook, rugged and durable, for less than $400.

Great! A super-portable that you could carry in one hand. And it ran Linux, to boot
