Asus Eee PC changing the game

November 20th 2007 18:13
This editorial post on Ars Technica describes how the Asus Eee PC is slapping Intel on the bum (in encouragement) and slapping Microsoft in the face (in contempt).

I've written about the Asus Eee PC before, and I had nothing but praise for the laptop, despite the fact that people are complaining about the tiny keyboard.

As the article says:

"The overall verdict is fairly unanimous: the device's keyboard is a bit cramped, but in terms of price, performance, and features the Eee PC hits the trifecta."

It uses Intel hardware, which is just more candy for Intel. Intel has been trumped by AMD, who make competing chips at substantially lower prices. With the use of Intel chips in the Eee, though, they've got access to that bottom segment of the market.

The Eee does not use, as I gleefully pointed out before, Microsoft Windows, instead relying on a lean Linux distribution that has been customized to make Windows users feel at home.

Oh no:

"In sum, Linux is now the popular quarterback at the new mobile party, and Microsoft is just that kid who used to be cool back in grade school when tetherball was the hot game and he was king of the pole. If Microsoft wants to break back into the popular crowd, it's going to have to put on something a bit fresher than Windows Mobile 6, which feels like the operating system equivalent of feathered hair and tight-rolled jeans."

Another forward thinking move by Asus is that the Eee PC does not have an optical drive, instead relying on flash storage and wireless connectivity to bring the butter home. This lowers the price but also helps us get rid of our CD/DVD fixation. Yeah! No more!

I'd get one, if it were available. Is it here? What's the price in Australia?
