Google's 10GbE switch
November 25th 2007 18:45
Hmmm, a secret post from Nyquist Capital that suggests that Google is building a secret 10GbE switch.
Let's break it down: 10GbE stands for 10 gigabits per secondYour text goes here Ethernet.
It's basically a core component in building an Internet link that is much faster than the ones we're currently using.... most Internet Service Providers are rolling out GbE, which is 1 gigabit per second. Google's secret service is going to offer 10 times that rate, albeit not for residential access.
"Through our investigative research, Nyquist Capital reached the conclusion that 12 months ago Google took a look at the state of the art in 10GE switching equipment and decided that it could do better. The reasons behind this decision will have a large impact on how the small but rapidly growing 10GbE equipment and component market evolves."
It seems like such a small deal. After all, it's only 10 times faster - what' the big deal, right?
I suppose it's big news, not because of the technology, but because Google is behind it... by branching out into the switch market, they're taking on a piece of the pie. the 10GbE market was floundering as GbE seemed better value. By pushing this forward, we might see some very interesting moves by Google in the next few years, especially if they win the wireless spectrum auction...
