Looking back at the iPod's haters

While it might be an effective advertising, Apple will not have to rely on cute girls to sell the new iPhone... people are lining up around the block to get it, apparently.
Ok, I made that up. But certainly some people are lining up to get them, and if the block is short enough, the line could potentially extend around it.
Of course, the iPhone has its detractors. There's always going to be some people that oppose the new products that Apple puts out, even among Mac fanboys; interestingly, there were detractors of the iPod when it first came out, too. Time has certainly proved them to be wrong, as the iPod has revolutionized music and online delivery.
Looking at an old Mac forum, you can see all the disdain and contempt that was expressed for the iPod when it first came out.
"All that hype for an MP3 player? Break-thru digital device? The Reality Distiortion Field™ is starting to warp Steve's mind if he thinks for one second that this thing is gonna take off."
Of course, it was a break-through device. Apple's music player was one of the first to combine large storage with an intuitive interface; as always, the Apple iPod looked beautiful, as well. Before it came along, music players were designed by functional-thinking engineers, who tended to put countless buttons on an MP3 player, linking ugliness and complexity with cool.
