Simple tips to protect your e-mail password

November 15th 2006 18:21

With technology bringing millions of people across the world together it has also become easier for the malicious minds to mix in with the crowd . One of the most dangerous threats in the Internet world today is password stealing. But there are some simple tips one can follow to ensure that their passwords are not stolen.

1.Use complex passwords using a mix of alphabets capitals numbers and symbols

2.Don't store your password on a pc coz u might get hacked unless ur pc is well protected with a firewall,anti- virus, anti-trojans and spyware detectors. http://www.techsupp ortalert. com/best_ 46_free_utilitie s.htm (go there and u will find some free useful tools like anti-virus and stuff.)

3.Don't click on any links directly (copying and pasting is more safe) either on the chat room or on your mail.

4.Check the urls of the links before u sign in...like for eg:- yahoos urls are always unique like photos.yahoo. com if yahoo.com is replaced with something like yahoo.tc.something( like the ones i have been getting recently on my pms) then u know that url is fake.

5.Fake mails with fake urls that looks like the bank u are dealing with is another way of getting ur passwords. For example I had a fake mail from someone pretending to be citibank and with hotlink to citibank.com in the mail but when I put my cursor over the hotlink before clicking on it i realised the url it provided was actually leading me to some other site. Don't just go in and sign in on a site just coz it looks the same. Always be careful abt the url.

6.Always try to have another mail Id for ur business and very personal deals which wld be totally different from the Id u use for chatting and making friends.

7.If u want to delete ur yahoo account forever go here:- http://help. yahoo.com/ l/us/yahoo/ edit/changing_ users/edit- 23.html or here:- https://edit. yahoo.com/ config/delete_ user

Also if you guys are interested in knowing everything about phishing attacks you can read a comprehensive article about it here. In these days when phishing attacks are so rampant and it is happening not just through emails but through popular websites like myspace everyone should stay guarded.
