Students in Vladivostok to recieve free netbooks
December 3rd 2008 21:11
While we're getting jacked on the price of Eee netbooks, Russia is stepping up to bat with a whole fleet of free netbooks for lucky kids in Vladivostok.
They're delivering around 1 000 netbooks to students and teachers, and the books will be running some variant of Linux. It's a great program, one that can deliver the potential of computing power to students, in a package that is easily carried and modified.
From the article:
"Инте ресн& #1099;й эксп& #1077;рим&# 1077;нт реши& #1083;и пров& #1077;сти во Влад& #1080;вос&# 1090;окс 082;ом госу& #1076;арс&# 1090;вен 085;ом унив& #1077;рси&# 1090;ете экон& #1086;мик&# 1080; и серв& #1080;са"
I had a couple of friends from Vladivostok, and they never sounded happy about going back. It's part of Russia, but so far away that the city deals more with China, it seemed, than Moscow.
My friends would go into China for big shopping sprees, buying jeans and CDs.
Now, though, things will reverse towards Vladivostok, with the Russian kids getting an early jump into technology and open source software - meanwhile, the Russian economy will soar, spurred by the demands of the government for young adults to have more children.
All I'm waiting for - Russian videogames that'll work on the netbooks, which I can download for free and apply some English language patch. A new era of innovation and originality, spurred by the Russian mentality. Vladivostok, the new center of technology - can it happen?
I don't know - it's awfully cold there... could you attract international experts to a city pounded by the Siberian winds?
Why not? After all, some of the world's best engineers came to the frozen canals of Ottawa, Canada, despite the frigid winters and the mosquito-laden summers.
