Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope can boot in 21 seconds

The next version of Ubuntu is slated to come out later this year and is code-named "Jaunty Jackalope", after the mythical beast that combines the terrifying flesh-eating body of a rabbit and the menacing spikes of the antlers of a deer.

In addition to a host of new features, I'm most excited by the Kubuntu variant, which looks like it'll contain more KDE 4 apps, and will come packaged with KDE 4.2. That means a more stable desktop and one that offers more features and bug-stomping.

Well, I'm down with Kubuntu as a replacement for Windows. I've been using it for over a year and I'll never go back... it's easier than every to do my work on Kubuntu, with its roster of free apps that work incredibly well together.

There are, of course, problems with Kubuntu and one that plagues me is that it never boots fast enough. It loads one waitbar, then loads KDE... it's not too bad, but it's not lightning quick, like earlier versions seemed to be.

Nice - Softpedia did some benchmarking with the Ubuntu Jaunty Alpha and found that, on a slick system, the OS boots up in a little more than 21 seconds.

"Announced on Christmas Eve, the EXT4 filesystem is now declared stable and it is distributed with version 2.6.28 of the Linux kernel and later. However, the good news is that the EXT4 filesystem was implemented in the upcoming Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha 3 a couple of days ago and it will be available in the Ubuntu Installer, if you choose manual partitioning"

Twenty-one seconds sounds good, but is it fast enough? No, I don't think so... but that's the beauty of Linux - with constant development and the overarching idea that Linux should work on older machines, too, there's always the push to make code smaller, more efficient and faster.

That's a big separation between the FOSS world and the commercial software world, lead by Microsoft. Windows has been growing more and more bloated over the years, but Vista was the last straw for many users.
